The Best Places to Elope Near Asheville, NC

Asheville Elopement Locations

Big views, good light, and places that actually feel like something.

I’ve hiked, scrambled, and occasionally gotten a little lost finding these spots — so you don’t have to. After years of photographing elopements across Western North Carolina, these are the locations I come back to again and again.

Not because they’re trendy, but because they deliver something real: big views, good light, and the kind of quiet that makes your vows feel like they actually mean something.

Every couple is different, and every location hits different depending on the season, the time of day, and what kind of vibe you’re going for. If you’re in the early dreaming stage, this is a great place to start.

Craggy Gardens

Craggy Gardens is one of the most popular elopement spots near Asheville for good reason. The rhododendron blooms in June are unreal, and the 360-degree views from the summit make it feel like you’re standing on top of the world.

It’s right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, so you don’t need to be a hardcore hiker to get there — but it still feels wild and remote.

Sunrise here is the move. The fog rolls through the valleys below, the light turns everything gold, and you’ll usually have the trail to yourself.

The hike: Moderate. About 1.5 miles round trip to the summit. Rocky in spots, but manageable in boots.

Permit required: No.

Best time of year: Late May through October. June for rhododendrons, October for fall color.

Best for golden hour, grassy balds, and wind-in-your-hair moments

Black Balsam Knob

Black Balsam is dramatic in the best way. The grassy balds stretch out in every direction with almost no tree cover, which means the light at golden hour wraps around you like it was designed for photographs.

It’s also one of the higher-elevation spots I shoot at — over 6,000 feet — so the air feels different up there. Crisper. Bigger.

This is one of my go-to spots for couples who want that wide, cinematic, wind-swept look. Fair warning: it gets windy. Like, hold-your-vow-book-with-both-hands windy. But honestly? That’s part of the magic.

The hike: Easy to moderate. About 1 mile to the summit from the parking area. The trail is well-worn.

Permit required: No.

Best time of year: June through October. Fall color here is jaw-dropping.

Linville Gorge & Hawksbill Mountain

If you want a spot that feels truly wild, this is it. Linville Gorge is one of the most rugged wilderness areas east of the Rockies, and Hawksbill Mountain sits right on its rim with views that’ll make your jaw drop.

This isn’t a manicured park trail — it’s rocky, steep, and a little bit untamed. Which is exactly why the right couples love it.

The summit is a massive rock face that juts out over the gorge. Standing there for your ceremony feels like standing on the edge of something — literally and figuratively.

The hike: Moderate to strenuous. About 1 mile to the summit, but steep and rocky. Sturdy boots required.

Permit required: Weekend and holiday permits required May–October. Free, but limited — plan ahead.

Best time of year: April through November. October is peak.

Wiseman’s View

Not every couple wants to scramble up a mountain in their wedding outfit — and that’s totally fine. Wiseman’s View gives you one of the most stunning overlooks in all of Western North Carolina with almost no hiking.

You park, walk about 100 yards, and suddenly you’re staring down into Linville Gorge with Table Rock across the valley.

Sunset here is something else. The light pours across the gorge walls, and the whole landscape turns orange and purple. It’s perfect for couples who want drama without the sweat.

The hike: Very easy. Less than a 5-minute walk from the parking area.

Permit required: No.

Best time of year: Year-round, though fall is extraordinary.

Shortoff Mountain

Shortoff is one of my personal favorites. The trail takes you along the southern rim of Linville Gorge with views of Lake James shimmering below.

The final approach has this incredible cliff face where you can see for miles. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop talking for a second and just take it in.

This is a longer hike, so I typically recommend it for full-day elopement packages where we can take our time, stop for snacks, and let the day unfold naturally. No rush. Just trail, views, and vows.

The hike: Strenuous. About 5 miles round trip with elevation changes. Plan for 3–4 hours of hiking.

Permit required: Weekend and holiday permits required May–October.

Best time of year: March through November.

Best for intimate ceremonies, quiet trails, and tucked-away views

Hidden Waterfalls & Private Spots

Some of my favorite elopement locations aren’t on any “best of” list — and I’d like to keep it that way.

There are waterfalls, swimming holes, quiet forest pockets, and rocky overlooks across Western North Carolina that I’ve scouted specifically for elopements.

If you’re looking for something that feels like it’s just yours, let’s talk. I’ll help match you with a spot that fits your vibe, your fitness level, and the kind of day you actually want to have.

The hike: Depends on the spot. Some are easy walks, others take a little more effort.

Permit required: Varies by location.

Best time of year: Spring through fall, with backup plans always in the mix.
