Keep Your People Close—and Make Some Room for the Mountains

Intimate weddings give you the best parts of a wedding celebration without needing the day to feel like a production.

Celebrate with your favorite people, have dinner together, exchange vows somewhere that feels personal—and still leave some room to get outside with just the two of you.

I’ll help keep the photography relaxed and natural while making sure the day has enough breathing room to actually enjoy it. You can see more of how I photograph these days or take a look at wedding photography pricing when you are ready.

Weddings With Some Fresh Air

Outdoor Weddings in the Blue Ridge Mountains

The weddings I photograph around Asheville tend to be small enough that you can actually spend time with the people you invited. Less rushing from one scheduled thing to another, and more room for the moments that happen naturally.

Western North Carolina gives you plenty of ways to build that kind of day—mountain rentals, cabins tucked into the woods, outdoor ceremony spaces, waterfalls, and overlooks that can become part of the celebration instead of just somewhere you go for photos.

If you are still figuring out where everything could happen, my Asheville Elopement Guide is a useful place to start. And if you want to hear what working together actually felt like for other couples, you can read their experiences here.

My approach is to document the day as it unfolds—the big moments, the weird little ones, your people, and the landscape around you—so the photographs feel connected to what the day was actually like.

Why Asheville Works

A Wedding Day With Your People—and Some Room to Get Outside

Asheville has that useful middle ground: it feels wild enough to make the mountains part of the experience, but it is still easy enough for family and friends to get here, stay nearby, and celebrate with you.

Why couples choose Asheville

You do not have to travel far from town to find mountain overlooks, waterfalls, forests, cabins, and outdoor spaces that feel completely removed from city life.

That makes it easier to build a wedding around both things that matter: time with your people and time outside together.

  • Mountain scenery in nearly every direction
  • Cabins and venues tucked into the landscape
  • Easy access to trails, waterfalls, and the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • A more relaxed feel than a traditional ballroom wedding

If you are still figuring out the possibilities, the Asheville Elopement Guide and my Asheville and WNC location guide are good places to start.

What the day can look like

01

Getting Ready

Start slowly at a cabin, rental, lodge, or venue with the people closest to you.

02

First Look

Share a private moment together—or with a parent or someone else important—before everything gets moving.

03

Ceremony

Gather everyone outside for vows somewhere that feels connected to the place you chose.

04

People + Portraits

Make family photos while everyone is together, then leave some room for the two of you to wander or head somewhere scenic.

05

Celebrate

Come back together for dinner, drinks, toasts, dancing—or whatever actually sounds like a good way to end the day.

A Loose Wedding-Day Flow

What a Typical Outdoor Wedding Day Looks Like

Every wedding is different, but many follow a similar flow that makes time for moments that help tell the story of your wedding day experience - beginning with the more emotional candids that happen during getting ready, to the excitement of a first look, all the way through to a reception or meal with family and friends.

Ultimately, you don’t need to follow any script on your wedding day - but if you’re unsure on how to begin, or if you need a little inspo—keep reading…

Getting Ready

The day often begins at a nearby cabin, lodge, or venue where couples prepare with family and close friends.

First Look

Some couples choose to share a first look before the ceremony. This might be a private moment between the couple or a first look with a parent or close family member. These quieter moments often become some of the most meaningful and emotional photographs of the day.

Client Testimonials

  • A bride and groom walking arm in arm on a grassy outdoor wedding aisle with guests seated on white chairs in the background.

Andy was a pleasure to work with throughout the process. He knows how to balance explaining everything through his professional experience as well as answering questions in an easily digestible format based on who he is talking to.

When it came to the wedding itself and the adventure shoot that we did with him, he was quick, efficient, and just a great person to be with. My family had nothing but positive things to say about him after he left and they love the photos he took.

For the adventure shoot itself, he was great at pacing the hike and photos with us so that we wouldn't miss a single moment of the sunset. I would definitely do the adventure shoot with him again 10 out of 10 times. Yes it was a little difficult but we got some amazing pictures that I just don't see myself ever getting again in my life.

The photo variety and how Andy handles himself is enough for me to recommend him to anyone on the fence. Couldn't imagine our wedding day and adventure shoot without him there.

  • A newlywed couple holding hands and walking down an outdoor garden path, smiling and laughing, with guests in the background on a cloudy day.

We booked Andy for our destination micro wedding in Asheville NC in September of 2025! He did not disappoint in any way! From our first time talking with him over video call we knew he was going to do an amazing job, with the way he responded to our questions and took care of everything. He was in contact with us the months leading up to the wedding, coming up with ideas for our hike into the mountains for pictures and everything else. The day of the wedding he showed up and got to work! It was easy to see he was going to do a great job the moment he entered the venue. He has so much energy and passion for what he does! When we were hiking into the mountains in our full wedding attire he kept the energy up and kept us motivated to get to the destination and it was much needed. He had already scoped out the place we were going to get pictures and had ideas of what would make for a great photo. Even after a long hike with all his gear and cameras he was hustling to get every photo and angle to make them amazing. When we got our photos back we were amazed at how they came out and how many moments he captured that we didn't even realize he was was taking. We both agree that Andy took our ideas and ran with it and made it better than we could have imagined! We HIGHLY recommend him for a wedding photographer and also any other adventure photos you may need. He is highly skilled and has the passion and energy to make your experience amazing! We can not thank him enough for the memories he created and the photos we will have to look at our whole lives!

  • A groom jumping in the air and a bride holding a bouquet outdoors, with a mountainous forest background during fall.

My wife and I had an amazing experience with Andy as our photographer for our engagement photos and wedding. He is an incredibly kind human being and an even better photographer. From helping us navigate our big day to climbing rock walls to get the perfect shot, we couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. Our photos are STUNNING! Every photo had a great balance of the mountainous landscape, fall colors, and really captured how beautiful the day was. Detail photos, dress photos, couple's photos, family photos, funny moments, etc. everything got captured in the best way!

If you want a photographer that's full of ideas, is kind-hearted, and truly wants your big day to be special, then Mountain Wed Photography is right for you!

Intimate Outdoor Wedding FAQ

A Few Things Couples Usually Ask

You do not need to have every part of the day figured out before reaching out. These are a few of the questions that usually come up while couples are deciding what their wedding could look like.

Q

Can we still include traditional wedding elements?

Absolutely. You can have a ceremony, wedding party, family photos, dinner, toasts, dancing, cake, or anything else that matters to you. An outdoor wedding does not have to mean giving those things up—it just gives you more freedom in how the day fits together.

Q

Can we leave the venue for some mountain time?

Yes. Some couples spend most of the day celebrating with family and then head somewhere scenic for portraits, private vows, or a short adventure together. My Asheville + WNC location guide can give you an idea of what is nearby.

Q

What happens if the weather changes?

Mountain weather changes quickly, so I plan with some flexibility built in. We can adjust timing, change locations when needed, and keep backup options in mind. I also have a mountain wedding packing guide with practical ideas for staying comfortable outside.

Q

How much photography coverage do we need?

It depends on how much of the story you want documented. Six hours can work well for a smaller wedding concentrated in one area, while additional coverage gives you more room for getting ready, family time, dinner, or a separate mountain adventure. You can see the current options on my wedding photography pricing page.

Q

Do you help with locations and the timeline?

Yes. I can help you think through locations, travel time, sunset, permits, weather, privacy, and how much time different parts of the day realistically need. The goal is not to over-schedule everything. It is to make the day easier to move through.

Q

Do you photograph weddings outside Asheville?

Yes. Asheville is home base, but I photograph weddings throughout Western North Carolina, including the Blue Ridge Mountains, Pisgah, the Smokies, the High Country, and areas around Linville Gorge.

Ready When You Are

Planning an Intimate Outdoor Wedding in Asheville?

You do not need the whole day mapped out before you reach out. Tell me what you know so far—your date, who you are bringing along, where you might want to celebrate, and whether you want to build a little mountain time into the day. I can help you figure out what makes sense from there.
